Announcing: Hillgrove Girls U15 Select Team for Spring 2018

Dear Players and Parents:

Hillgrove Girls Lacrosse is pleased to announce formation of our 1st Girls Senior Division Select Team for 6-8th Grade players.  The Senior Select team is an accelerated program for 6-8th grade players that desire to play at a more competitive level than traditional recreational formats.  This team will replace the U15 girls team that is normally fielded as part of the MAYLA Recreational League.   We encourage all interested 6,7 &8th grade players to attend the skill evaluation for this team, understanding that level of commitment expected of members of this team for the season is greater than those participating in recreational formats.   Our select team will engage in more practices and play more games than recreational teams.

We have taken the liberty of attaching a question and answer document, however here are a few highlights of the program:

  • Eligible Players:  Any 6-8th Grade Girls
  • Out of HIllgrove District Participation:  Yes but limited to 3-5 players
  • Team Size:  16-20 players (including goalies)
  • Team Selection:  Via player evaluation being held on Sunday, December 17th;  Not all players will be chosen to participate
  • Season Dates:  January 13th - May 10th (estimated)
  • Practice Days / Time:  Mondays & Thursdays from 6:30-8:30pm; Saturday mornings on non-game days
  • Coaching Staff:  Randy Russell, Chris Lasalle, Jeff Flowers

FAQ's

Q:  What players are eligible to play on the Hillgrove Girls Senior Division Select Team?

A:  Any 6th, 7th and 8th Grade player is eligible to play as on this Hillgrove Girls Senior Division Select Team.

Q:  Is any player that is interested able to play as part of this team?

A:  We are only fielding one (1) Senior Division Select Team this Spring.  This team will consist of 17-19 field players in addition to 1-2 goalies.  We do not believe we will be able to roster every player that is interested in playing for this team.

Q:  If you are not going to be able to take everyone that is interested, how will you determine who is able to play on this team?

A:  We will have a skill based evaluation for this team on Sunday, December 18th (Time TBD).  We may have an additional evaluation date in early January, however please do not plan on this.

Q:  How will this evaluation be run?

A:  We will have coaches running stations where skills will be evaluated by position.  Coaches will compare evaluations and final decisions will be made by player in a committee format.  Players that do not attend an evaluation, will not be considered for this team.

Q:  Will players that do not attend Hillgrove be allowed to participate on this team?

A:  Yes assuming that the High School they will attend does not have a team playing as part of the Newtown League.  However, we are going to limit participation from outside of Hillgrove to no more than 3-5 players.

Q:  Will the non-Hillgrove players receive the same playing time and benefits as part of this team?

A:  Absolutely.  The only limitation we are placing on out of Hillgrove District players is the number of players able to participate.  Once the team is selected, the team will be managed based on the player’s individual performance.

Q:  What will happen if my daughter is not selected to participate on this team?

A:  Hillgrove will continue to field recreational teams as part of MAYLA.  Players will not selected for the Select team will be allowed to participate in any Recreational team for which they are age eligible.

Q:  What can we expect during the Spring Season for this team?

A:  This team is structured to emulate a season similar to the High School Varsity and Junior Varsity teams.

  • Season Dates:  January 13th – May 10th (estimated)
  • Number of games:  This team will play 12-18 regular season games.  They will also participate in a post season bracketed tournament which will have a Season Champion.
  • Competitive Expectation:  The teams we will be scheduled to play will be other feeder team’s Senior Select Teams.  These programs will include:  Milton, Lassiter, West Forsyth, Lambert, Centennial, Northview, etc.
  • Logistics:  Of the 12-18 regularly scheduled game, 50% of those game will be scheduled at home; 50% will be scheduled away.

Q: What is the level of commitment for this format / team?

A:  The intent of this team is to prepare players for the rigor of the High School Varsity / JV season.   It is expected that players will attend every practice and game.   Excused absences are permissible for homework, illness, school events.  However, multiple absences from practices and games may affect playing time in games.  We will work as a team to support logistics to and from practice and games.  However, this format / team may not be the best for players who view practices and games as not important or optional.

Q:  When will this team practice?

A:  This team will practice on Mondays and Thursdays from 6:30-8:30.  We will also practice on Saturdays when not playing games.  The Select team will begin practicing Saturday, January 13th.

Q;  When can we expect games to take place?

A:  We anticipate a scrimmage event the last week of January.  Our first games should take place the 1st – 2nd week of February.  Games will take place on Saturdays and Sundays.  We do not anticipate any games to be played during school days/nights.

Q:  Where will practices and games be held?

A:  Hillgrove High School lower fields.

Q:  Who are the coaches for this team?
A:  Randy Russell, Chris Lasalle and Jeff Flowers will be coaching this team.

Q:  How can I find out more about this team and ask any questions that are not covered here?

A:  We will be having two informational conference calls
